“Our world is facing two pandemics right now. The acute one, Covid-19, is swift and relentless – and it’s disproportionately preying upon people affected by an even larger, more enduring pandemic: obesity.” Dr Rami Bailony
New research is revealing clear links between obesity and severe symptoms or even mortality from Covid-19. It’s clear that our society and healthcare systems need overhauls in the way they treat obesity. Even as a chronic condition, obesity and those with it are not treated the same as patients with other chronic conditions, and it’s merely seen as a lifestyle choice for affected individuals. Presently, our health care systems do not provide adequate energy, protection, and resources for obese patients, and insurance companies will often deny the obese coverage, even with this chronic condition (when they’d provide coverage for those with other chronic conditions). We need to dedicate more resource and energy to treating, assisting and coaching obese patients so that this pandemic (and pandemics to come) won’t continue their deadly assault.
The C3LX platform provides the tools and environment that works to get to the root of the problem, providing care teams and patients with the tools to track weight, activity, sleep, meals and health goals, ultimately working toward improving health outcomes – especially for those with obesity and other chronic conditions. When patients make healthier choices and make the hard behavioral changes improve their overall health, they’ll have stronger immune systems and increase their odds of recovery and survival from viral and bacterial infections.
The world’s collective fixation is on Covid-19 therapeutic treatments and vaccine development. While this is warranted, it’s incredibly important to focus on readily available prevention methods that increase human immune response, getting healthier in the meantime and preventing disease with ongoing healthy behaviors and behavior change, which could have a more profound impact over the course of a patient’s life than a single vaccine.
